It’s here! It’s here! Every day in October, we’re going to whittle poor Josh’s fingers down to little nubs as he tries to ink a new panel of this comic, every day. You can follow along on Instagram, or I’ll also aim to post the panels here on the site.
As we mentioned previously, each page (other than the first one) is laid out in a 6-panel grid, so every six days or so we’ll collect ’em all into a page for you. Then at the end of the month, the whole thing will be collected into a… Uh… Mini-comic, maybe? Haven’t quite figured out that part yet, but we’ve got 30 more days so I’m sure it should be fine.
Anyway, the story is titled “Detective Honeybear and the Tale of the Tricky Treats,” a spoooooky Halloween story we hope you enjoy. And good luck to Josh, who is going to be slathered with ink by the time this thing is done!
Here’s a little curtain raiser and a quick title thingy I put together on my phone, as well as Josh’s first panel to get things started. Also, we’ve gotta correct some dialogue in the first panel, we know. Sorry.
Hi there! It’s been a few years, right? Sure has!
Since our last post which looks to me like we were waiting to finish up our Kickstarter project… We finished up our Kickstarter project. Successfully! Hooray!
We also posted two issues of Detective Honeybear on ComiXology, which you can check out here:
Detective Honeybear and the Case of the Curious Cap: https://www.comixology.com/Detective-Honeybear-1/digital-comic/37896
Detective Honeybear and the Mystery of the Terrible Llamas: https://www.comixology.com/Detective-Honeybear-2/digital-comic/37900
And we started discussing the third issue, Detective Honeybear and the Deadly Domicile which was all fine and good… Until life intervened. Short version: both myself and Josh had a bunch of babies. Or rather, our wives had the babies, and we felt semi-obligated to help take care of said babies, and also there was work, and honestly Netflix has been putting out a LOT of shows that are pretty good…
Anyway, we talked about it off and on for a while. I even went so far as to come up with an outline for the third issue which I last accessed, as far as I can tell, on March 17, 2016. But what with all of the above (seriously, have you seen GLOW? It’s great!) we never got it together.
UNTIL NOW!
***lightning crashes, we cackle maniacally***
Josh came to me with the idea of doing something super focused for Inktober, which, if you can’t figure out, is an event where you ink a panel a day in October. He had previously suggested doing some sort of Instagram comic, which I thought was a neat idea; so we melded these two, I wrote a script, and Josh is hard at work prepping for next month.
The short version of this is, we’ve got a 31 panel long Halloween Detective Honeybear mystery that will officially launch on October 1, and wrap up on October 31. And if you want to follow along, head to our Instagram page, where I’ll also be aiming to post some behind-the-scenes looks as we go.
What’s that address, you ask? Why it’s http://instagram.com/detectivehoneybear
Look at this adorable logo Josh made:
SO CUTE. Anyway, based on demand, I’ll look to update this site a little more regularly than every six years. And we’ll most likely collect the comic in some way once it’s done.
Thanks for your support. And thanks for your patience.
This is it, the last update before the Kickstarter closes. Right now, we’re fully funded on issue #2, expanded the print run to 3,000, and about 50% funded on issue #3. Which is mind-boggling.
I’ll have more to say once we’re all done with the funding tonight, but right now, wherever we end up: thank you.
So many updates today, we almost don’t have room for them all! Here we go:
– You can now pre-order the third issue of Detective Honeybear on our Kickstarter. Those who have pledged before can just add a bit to their pledge to get issue #3, tentatively titled “Detective Honeybear and the Deadly Domicile” here.
– We’re going to get to do a 3,000 copy print of “Detective Honeybear and the Terrible Llamas… Which also means we can seriously look into bigger distribution methods to stores, like Diamond. We should also have waaaay more than enough for you guys, which is nice, too.
– Oh yeah, that ALSO means… FREE comiXology downloads unlocked for everyone who has pledged $10 or more. You’ll be getting those after the Kickstarter is done, but we’re so excited to be able to offer that to you all! Hooray!
– Here’s the craziest news so far, which I teased the other day: Detective Honeybear is getting published… In Germany! No joke! A really fantastic indie comics publisher called Dani Books will be publishing a German translation of the “Detective Honeybear: Special Edition” including both stories, and some bonus materials. In German. Really.
It won’t hit (German) comic book stands until next year, but in the meantime, Dani Books has their own crowd-funding project going on, for an art book about the incredible Don Rosa. Check it out here: http://www.indiegogo.com/donrosa-art
That’s it for now… Five days to go! Let’s do this!
